A rather complicated problem (GPU or PSU failure?)

My computer now freezes once for a while, after rebooting I would get a black screen or the Starting Windows screen (the computer still responds to keystrokes and I can still barely control it using TeamViewer, but the video output would get messed up when viewed from my phone), and the only way to get video working again is to run system restore to return the computer to a state before it froze.

Any ideas on rooting out the cause?

Take out the GPU and hook the monitor up to the inbuild display sockets, run your system and test/
If that fixes it then you know the GPU is at fault.

If not then look in your event viewer and see if there is anything in there that is causing the issues (these are usually "Error" labelled messages)
Sometimes the GPU drivers can be temperamental so try downloading a set of older drivers that were released at a date/time that you know your computer was stable at and install those. Check if it makes a difference.

If not then it could possibly be your PSU not providing enough or simply wearing out if it isn't a top quality brand, so maybe borrow a friends which you know is higher wattage and test again.

I ckecked the card again and one of the open memory latch blocked the GPU from sitting properly. I reseated the card (with the said latch closed) and it seems to be working again.

Will stress test computer later to see if it really solves the problem (I ran a system restore before opening the computer).
