I want to use pcie 3.0 x4 slot for second gfx card, does the motherboard have to specifically support that slot?

Alright, so I already know that the x4 slot is about a 5% bottleneck on high end cards which i'm not worried about, I'm worried about cooling more. The EVGA Z97 FTW does support SLI but the issue is how close the cards are i want some space between them. The first and second slots are what support SLI however I wanted to use the top x16/x8 slot and the 3rd slot down which is an x4 will this work? If not I plan on getting the Asus Hero VII which has enough space.

That's why I suggested to try your original gfx card in the PCie X4 slot to see if it even would work. I think it will. But you'll need a longer bridge.
Or don't you have any components yet?

Btw, where did you hear that using the PCIe x4 slot was a 5% bottle neck? From my experience it is worse than that. It isn't just the bandwidth difference (5%?) , it is the frame times sync that causes massive stutter.

I read a really long article on the subject, if it causes stutter though forget it. my current board has all x16 slots so i cant test it
