My question is if I have my os on a ssd and I have 2x 3tb HD one red for main and one green for storage and backup in raid1,(yes I know it duplicates) will both drives be running all the time or only when data is being duplicated?

Solution
Two drives in a RAID 1 configuration will have data written to both drives at all times. The write speed will be dependent on the slowest drive (green). So having a RED and a GREEN in a RAID1 will slow down the I/O to the slowest drive.

You could create a RAID1 volume and partition it into two pieces but both the RED and GREEN would be part of both pieces.
