Can I SLI two Gtx 970s using a PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 2.0 slot?

My asus z97m-plus motherboard only has one PCI e 3.0 slot and the other is a PCI e 2.0 slot. Can i SLI two 970s together with this?

If so, would there be any performance drop due to the fact that it is a PCI e 2.0 slot?
