I see my first attempt at posting this didn't work so I'll try again. I hope it doesn't end up in a double post.

I want to know if anyone has recently tried using the G3258 with the H81M-P33 as in the article Tom's Hardware posted back in July about overclocking the G3258 on a budget: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/pentium-g3258-b81-cheap-overclocking,3888.html

I'd like to know if Intel recently released any firmware updates that would prevent me from getting similar results. I also want to know if I'd need to update the BIOS before using the G3258, and if I could update the BIOS off a flash drive without a compatible CPU should I receive a board with an older BIOS version that doesn't support the Haswell Refresh line of CPUs.

Any and all help is appreciated and if anyone has better suggestions for a cheap H81 mobo to use for overclocking this processor, I'd be happy to hear them. Thanks a lot.

I would go MSI Z97S SLI Plus similar price with ASRock Z97 Anniversary, but ASRock Z97 Anniversary is tier four board,MSI Z97S SLI Plus is Tier Two board, tier two board have more better quality and overclocking performance than tier four board.

Tier Two: High end. Great MoBos, SLI capable with good enough thermals and power to take up any CPU, not the best for extreme OCing but do OC very well. Have many premium features as well. Quality is good, no known persistent issues.

I would use the Anniversary, but it costs about 30 dollars more where I am, and I see people have been able to get up to a 4.5 GHz overclock on the ASRock H81M-HDS. That to me is good enough, provided it comes with a recent enough BIOS to support my CPU out of the box. I don't mind updating the BIOS, so long as I don't have to get someone else to do it with a different CPU.

How do I know what BIOS version the mobo has if I haven't even bought it yet? Will it say on the vendor's website? I mean, I know I could check that once I have the physical mobo in my hands, but I'd rather be sure before I buy it.

I've looked at the differences between the different classes of motherboard, and I just don't see it as being worth it for me. I'd rather put that money towards a better GPU.

Hi, I just built with this exact combo. Works great very satisfied. Running g3258 @ 4.4ghz at 1.275Vcore. Even on stock cooler temps never reach 50.

From that article -

"The Pentium, also topped with a bundled cooler and factory grease, ran exceedingly warm, too. At the same 4.5 GHz and 1.3 V, it quickly exceeded 90 °C before we intervened, shut down, and reconsidered our approach. Dropping to 4.4 GHz and scaling back to 1.275 V helped a bit. A load temperature around 86 degrees is still warmer than I’d want to see long-term."

"After a quick flash to a beta firmware we found, the H81 platform picked up Intel’s Pentium G3258, opened up ratios as high as 80x, and sent us on our way."

I think its easier just to buy the ASRock Z97 mobo for another $30.

Tier Four: Basic Motherboards. They have all the basic features, ie., 4 DIMMs, one x16 slot, SATA 3 with USB 3.0 headers. Suited for gamers on tight budget and mainstream general-purpose users. Don’t expect high performance in terms of OCing. Not suitable for high end builds. Average quality, but fine for OCing lower TDP CPUs like Pentium.

There is absolutely no reason to get exotic motherboard if you are going for budget build like G3258.

It seems everyone who posted the answer saying, Z97 or gtfo doesn't know what it means to be on budget.

for $30 you are going to WASTE on good motherboard for g3258, you'd rather get another RAM stick or better yet, get higher tier graphics card.

You don't NEED Z-series to overclock G3258, you can totally save that money.

People please, not everyone has waterfall of money flowing to waste money like that. Maybe you do, but not everyone.
