I'm so torn on this and it's largely due to my lack of experience with motherboards in general, and I'm really trying to make the best decision, and not just buy the best deal. Paying an extra +/- $75 doesn't break my bank and I could care less about it, but buying the most expensive doesn't mean its better either. Anyone want to help me compare the following combos so I can make the best decision possible for me?

Quick rundown of what I'm looking for:

  • 1) i7 4790K intel board
    2) LGA 1150 sockets
    3) Currently using single GPU, want the option to buy a second down the road, hassle free
    4) I want to be overclock ready, best bios, best firmware
    5) Fits inside an ATX FULL case
Thermaltake VP40031W2N Black ATX Full Tower Computer Case w/ Liquid Cooling System
    6) Needs a strong LAN, don't care much about wifi
    7) Plenty of USB 3.0 space, Thunderbolt ready would be sweet but not essential
    8) DDR3 ram, because I already own it.
The options I'm looking at:

$199.49 GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-UD7 TH LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
$189.79 ASRock Z97 Extreme6/ac LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
$219.99 ASRock Z97 OC Formula LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
$164.95 ASUS SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK2 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
$204.99 ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
$238.49 ASUS SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK1 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
$283.63 ASUS MAXIMUS VI FORMULA LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX gaming board with double-sided ROG Armor, 23C-degrees cooler CrossChill and 120dB SNR, 600ohm audio

I kinda really like the way those Sabertooth MARK1's look, with that durable board lining, however I'm not all that sure its that protective, might be a nice leak guard for minor LCS accidents.

What do you guys think? Preferred price range is $150-$250 but could be persuaded to go further with the right argument. Any help that could make my decision easier would be appreciated. I'm a bit overwhelmed with these boards right now.

Drop some knowledge on me friends. :)

I'm kinda digging the Sabertooth series from ASUS.

$238.49 ASUS SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK1 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX

$164.99 ASUS SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK2 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX

When you break down the stats on these two boards, the only difference between the MARK1 and the MARK2 is the Thermal Armoring and subsequently the tiny fan(s) that are underneath the armoring.

So the question is whether or not I want to pay the additional $75 for the armoring. Albeit, the armoring is sexy, I really like the way it looks, but at the end of the day, it's going to be inside a case, and not on my mantle. Therefore the MARK2 seems like the logical choice if I were to go that route, and it comes with a CPU (i7 4790K) Newegg bundle package for $478.98, effectively buying down the price of the MARK2 by $20.

Semi-neat video taking a better look at the MARK1 vs MARK2.
