So I am thinking about a new PC build a lot now due to it being quite close to Christmas and I was thinking about using a 120GB Kingston SSD for the OS. I of course want to use my 500GB HDD in the PC but I currently have windows 7 and a load of games installed on it. I want to completely wipe the HDD for the new PC. But how do you actually wipe/format the drive? If someone can tell me I would be grateful. Thanks.

Solution
Install the OS with only the SSD connected.
Once that is all up and running, reconnect the HDD.
Go into Disk Management, select each partition, Delete
With the single large unallocated partition, right click on it an see what options it gives you - Allocate, Format, etc, etc....

Open "Computer", right click the volume and select "Format". It should default to NTFS (mine doesn't even provide any other options for my storage drive) and then click start.

Of course, if this is currently your booted volume, you'd either have to wait until you have Windows 7 on your new drive and do it from desktop, or you can wipe it during the new install process.

In your case, unplug the data and power to the HDD (with the system shut down). Install the SSD (if not there already) and start the system. Install the new OS to the SSD. Once your new install of windows is fully updated and working, plug the power and data back into the HDD. You will be able to see it as a second drive. You can then copy ofa anything ypu want to save or just right click on it in "Computer" and select the format option. Once ypu format nothing can be retrieved so get off it all you want first.
