I'm sure its not the first time this has been asked but my search didn't produce any relevant results.

In August I bought OEM windows 7 64bit to upgrade my windows XP build from about 4 years ago. Bought a new SSD to go with it / DBAN'd my old HDD, formatted it, and was using it as storage. I had it up and running for MAYBE 3 months before my motherboard fried. I'm aware that windows is bound to the motherboard and OEM versions are even more strict when it comes to those policies. BUT I've also read of instances where Windows had renewed product keys for cases similar to mine.

I Frankenstein'd a temporary build for the time being running an old copy of XP, on a crappy HD that is running too slow for my tastes. I'm contemplating just using my SSD with a fresh install of XP using that key but IF I CAN I'd rather use my windows 7 key I bought in August.

Opinions on seeing if windows will renew my 7 key? anyone else have a similar scenario?

Thanks for the feedback in advance.

For a broken and replaced motherboard, you will probably be able to use that Windows 7 license. You will probably have to call and go through the phone robot to activate.
If that fails, you then call and talk to a human.
