I have a new HP ENVY 17-J184na with an intel core i7 4700mq 2.4ghz and an Nvidia gt840m is it worth it overclocking or is it even possible. Will it have any negative effects on my laptops lifespan?

Solution
There are no overclocking options on HP laptops as the BIOS doesn't allow it. HP deliberately install a very limited, cut-down BIOS with very few user-configurable settings. This is to prevent the user screwing something up and then expecting HP to fix it under warranty for free.

Furthermore, overclocking causes an increase in internal temperature. A laptop just wouldn't be able to cope with that and, unlike a PC, you can't fit extra cooling fans inside the case. The result would be an unstable system & eventual component failure.

If you want the freedom to overclock you need to build your own desktop PC using retail components, or have a local PC shop build one for you.
