To set the scene, this is a problem I've had for a very long time now, I remember it ever since I built the computer two years ago however has only been prominent the last few months. I've spent the last few weeks Googling around, looking at numerous threads here and on Reddit hoping I could find a solution without having to ask for help, but.. To no avail. I've tried numerous things, switching the positions of the RAM (from 1/3 to 2/4), cleaning the computer out (seemed to work for three days earlier this week, didn't have one single freeze, however since returned to it's usual bad behavior), updated my BIOS to the most recent update (which again seemed to help, with no freezes for a day but then reverted back to it's freezing issues), even buying a brand new GPU, I replaced my AMD Radeon 6750 for an Nvidia based MSI GTX 780, thinking new drivers and a new card would help but.. Not at all. I'm at my wit's end with this problem, I work from home and it's depressing having my computer out of action for several minutes at a time, I'm willing to spend as much as possible just to make sure I never have these problems again.

The actual problem is.. Strange, to me. The computer will suddenly freeze a few times an hour (mainly while watching any kind of video online, however, it isn't rare for it to just crash when I close a tab, or just randomly, and the problem is worse while rendering videos), and sometimes reveal the "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" message upon unfreezing, depending on the length of time. The complete freeze can be for anywhere between five seconds to three minutes in length, and once it's unfrozen I can continue to work and browse the internet without having to reboot or do anything special at all.

As I said, at first I thought it was a GPU problem, as that was the only thing I cheaped out on when I initially built the computer, buying a second hand GPU off a friend, but.. Since then it's became obvious that's not the problem. I've recently saw thanks to the MSI Afterburner tool that when the PC freezes the first core of the CPU will hit 100% randomly, for no reason, and upon that will (at least what I think) freeze the computer for that random amount of time. Here's a screenshot of the precise moment I presume it froze: http://gyazo.com/f6ae36e7968d37430fdd28eaaa383d79 - It froze literally the second I clicked on an auto-filled URL suggestion.

If anyone can offer a solution to this and the solution seemingly fixes this, I'll buy you a relatively cheap game off Steam when I next get paid in a few days, I know that there are numerous causes for this just from the hours of research I've put into trying to fix this problem, so any help, literally any help, would be so, so appreciated. Thanks for reading and for any help in advance.

i am having this issue for almost a month now and have been searching far and wide for a solution.
Im lucky enough that it is not as problematic as the OP's issue.
My issue is that while playing a certain game after a while the screen freezes and turns black before crashing to desktop.
When it returns to desktop i receive the message in the bottom right hand corner stating "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered".
I can still hear the game active in the background and i still have control of the game but there is no picture or display.
mine does not last as long as he OP's. it happens randomly and lasts for about 5 seconds every time. However the display will not recover until i leave the game and relaunch it upon which it may or may not happen again.
Mine only occurs when i play ARMA.
I have been climbing the walls trying to fix this issue.
There are hundreds of varied suggested soloutions all over the web but none have worked outright. Each have had minor success...
Some of the things i have tried.....
In Nvidia control panel setting Physx from auto memory to GPU.
I have wiped Nvidia Drivers and re installed. this had a short positive effect before reverting back to its original state.
I have completely taken the computer apart cleaned it and did a complete fresh install of the OS and all drivers. This too had a short lived success.
I was informed that it could be hidden malware bitcon mining. I got Malwarebytes, uninstalled all Nvidia drivers and in safe mode ran malwarebytes in everything... again had a short lived success and when the problem returned it became more frequent.
Yesterday i was informed that it normally results in a lack of voltage to the GPU... so i increased the voltage slightly to 10mv in MSI afterburner.
This worked for about 2 hours before a crash. i then increased the voltage to 20..30..40..50.. each resulting in a longer span of success but eventually crashing. I now have it set to max voltage and i am awaiting the inevitable crash to happen.
I never imagined it may be the CPU as suggested in the OP but ARMA is a very CPU intense game so is this the path i should be following?
I have a similar PSU to the OP.. is it at all possible that a upgraded PSU could be the fix?

My specs:
CPU: Intel core I7 4790k 4ghz
MOBO: Asus Maximus hero VII ROG edition
GPU: MSI GTX 970 4gb gaming edition
PSU: 650w OCZ Technology ZS 80+ Bronze power
