Just asking is this upgrade would be worth it and if so should I wait for the 8gb version of the 980. The reason I'm upgrading is because I made the mistake of getting 2gb 270x's instead of 4gb. Seeing as every game that's being released atm is already going over 3gb these cards are becoming obsolete quick. Also I'm not really a fan of Xfire (my bad), too much heat, too much, space, too much noise..

I'm looking to upgrade fairly quick so waiting on Nvidia's next flagship GPU, which will be around march (?), isn't really an option for me.

You're stressing the VRAM issue far too much. A 980 is enough to max ANY game at 1080p with WELL OVER 60fps. You will NOT EVER run out of VRAM at...

The consoles do not have access to 8gb VRAM. They have 8gb of RAM that is shared throughout the system and OS

Please don't compare console gaming to PC gaming. They are to each their own. Console gaming is optimized for hardware in them. PC optimization takes much more work because of the various hardware that can be used. And unlike consoles, PC gaming doesn't technically have a ceiling. If a person is experiencing low performance on a PC build, they can upgrade parts for better performance or change settings.

GRUxTSAR is correct. Consoles do not have 8GB of VRAM.

Makes sense, I now see why the 8gb would not be very good because of its 256-bit. I'm just scared about the fact that games could go above 4gb vram since I kind of like pretty games with ultra textures. Any predictions?

NO game at 1080p will use 4gb of VRAM without SERIOUS mods. Hell no game even uses 4gb at 1440p ultra

The thing is, your current build didn't have 4GB of VRAM. With CF and SLI, VRAM isn't added. So you've always had 2GB. What is your current VRAM usage? 4GB of VRAM is pretty big. It's not impossible to use more but as GRUxTSAR stated, that's some serious mods or very very high resolution.

Lately I've always been at max vram usage with Medium to High settings. Any higher than that and I would get pretty much the biggest stutters recorded in history. But as mentioned and as I read these last days (did a serious amount of research), no games should use more than 4 gb vram these days. If it does it's just a bad port and vram won't really change the fps numbers then. I might just get this 4gb version and see how things pan out. If vram usage does generally increase I'll upgrade to a card with more ram, if it doesn't but my fps is lacking I can still add another gtx 980. No?

You're stressing the VRAM issue far too much. A 980 is enough to max ANY game at 1080p with WELL OVER 60fps. You will NOT EVER run out of VRAM at 1080p. NO properly optimized game will EVER use 4gb VRAM at this point in time (Without Mods). When that time does come where games will use over 4gb, we'll be generations ahead of the Geforce 900 series
