I realize this has been asked before, but every board is different

I have an HP dv6.6c with 2013 bios
sandy bridge hm65 with i7-2670qm
8gb ram
ssd 120gb

Can i replace the i7-2670qm with an I7-3820qm ? a friend is giving it me...

Besides heat issues, will this thing boot?

Is this a fair upgrade? All the socket stuff looks the same as well as the chipset so i dont see why it wouldnt....

Um, the CPU you listed for upgrade is a DESKTOP socket 2011 CPU. Therefore the socket isn't the same at all.

Even with a new laptop CPU whether it will work depends on the HP BIOS as much as the other factors. What are you trying to do here? That should be a pretty fast laptop already. I'm not sure a CPU upgrade would be worth the trouble even if possible. Sandy to Ivy bridge wasn't a big jump to begin with.

and moreso i assumed since the dv6 was such a popular model, that someone would have had experience with this upgrade in regards to the bios accepting it.

I agree, its all about the bios, and that is the experience i am seeking.. If anyone has had success with this as there is no documentation i can find to support or deny this being a successful upgrade

Well I must confess I was baised towards the (small) desktop cpu difference; there is a big difference in clock speed which seems to account for most of the performance difference here. Plus the higher iGPU of course. Usually I'm skeptical of laptop CPU upgrades though this one could pay off if it's possible. I apologize if I came off as too dismissive.

I've only ever replaced a laptop CPU (for a customer of the shop) with a similar model when the original was having problems.

i definitely understand.... no issue.

If i had a dollar for every post i saw where a noob is posting about a cpu upgrade....

im pretty sure as i thought in the beginning, that this will be something i will have to venture and do on my own, and report back if it works..

i hate to use the term pioneer *but.... :)
