MSI Z87-G45 problems

I'm having massive issues with this brand new board. After 3 re-installations of W7 Pro 64 I'm ready to rma, unless someone knows a fix. I posted a thread on MSI's forums, but they are down and it states it will be until the 21st?

hardware

cpu: Intel G3258
board: MSI Z87 G45
ram: PNY ddr3 1600 1x8gb
gpu: MSI R9 270
psu: XFX TS 550w 80+ Bronze

After installing all drivers from the cd mouse and keyboard will only work in safe mode. After re-installing windows I have tried to install driver packages one by one and this has happened a number of times on random drivers.

Also, I cannot get any usb port other than the case ports to work. I have tried three different flash drives and none work. It was recommended to update BIOS, but without the usb ports working I can't. I tried writing the BIOS files to a cd-r, but in BIOS when I attempt to update I receive "no media found".

When I had a flash drive sporadically being recognized I kept receiving the message "do you want windows to scan & repair". No matter what I did this message kept flashing. It would not stop. After re-installing I get the message "usb not recognized". When going into device manager, it is listed as "unknown device". No matter what I do I cannot get it to work.

Any suggestions would be awesome to save me from having to rma this thing. Thank you!!!

well it shows how time can change I got a working msi rig here that's 14 years old and never had a issue with it and my ''last'' 3 asus boards were just junk and like you I rmaed one to them and got someone's else's rma sent back to me I guess in the hopes it worked for me or I would not notice

we all went asrock and gigabyte around here and so far so good but with anything theres always the chance of getting the lemon
I went with the z87 extreme 6 and put it together fired it up and booted 100% stable and never looked back after 9 months of use my last asus you did not know what it was going to do day by day ...

I sure hate it for ya on this .. I wish I knew what more to say to get your issue resolved

you should be ok to update the bios, but please use the usb on the o/i panel, not the one on your case
but if you dont know how to do it, send back for RMA for sure
I think because the bios is kinda old for g3258.

Even when using the front usb port I receive the "no media found" message when attempting to update BIOS. The BIOS version is 1.9, which is the latest official. A moderator from the MSI boards advised to update using their tool, but every time I tried to use it I would receive an error. It does sound like RMA is the only option :(

if you hooked up the headers for the usb wrong like it may be shorting there be sure the plugs are on the correct pins
also I had a case that had ''bad'' front panel usb and when it was hooked to the board it had this type of issues when unhooked all the rest went to working fine [???]

Interesting! I'll give it a shot before completely disassembling. The mouse and keyboard work fine using the front usb ports. I've google searched the issue and have seen a number of similar complaints. Many result in RMA. I'm very disappointed because I like MSI and have used many of their products. This is actually the most expensive board I've purchased from them and I expected more from it.

I down loaded the manual for the g65 a wile back and looked it over to see is there something like this for yours in the bios settings?? [page 3-10 ]

USB Configuration
Sets the onboard USB controller and device function. Press <Enter> to enter the submenu.
USB Controller [Enabled]
Enables or disables the onboard USB controller.
Legacy USB Support [Enabled]
Sets Legacy USB function support.
[Auto] The system will automatically detect if any USB device is connected
and enables or disables the legacy USB support.
[Enabled] Enable the USB support for legacy operating systems that do not
support USB.
[Disabled] The USB devices are available only for UEFI applications.
Onboard USB3.0 Controller [Enabled]
Enables or disables the external USB 3.0 controller.

Under usb config I only have the following below. All are set to enabled.

usb controller
xhci hand off
ehci hand off
legacy usb support

After switching everything to a new case and having the same problems I think I have no choice but to get rid of this board. Unfortunately for me I bent the usb 3.0 pins when trying to install into the new case. Also, one of the DIMM clips broke. MSI will no doubt charge me at least $45 I'd imagine. Add in shipping and this board just went from $100 after rebate while on sale to at least $155 or more. Or, I can sell it on ebay.

sorry to hear all that and they will look at that as user abuse and will charge you for all repairs ..

I was just hoping that after the bios change that usb settings had changed and just needed to be reset in the bios to get back working ..

so it looks like your down to doing what you feel is best and then hope for the best

I was so mad when I bent those pins yesterday! The DIMM clip was just icing on the cake. I'd rather sell it on ebay and get $30 or so than spend more money. This board was going to be to sell in a build as well. I'd keep it for myself, but like I said I cannot get the usb ports to recognize a flash drive at all. I could always get a usb 3.0 to 2.0 converter so I can still use the front 3.0 ports. This problem just seems so stupid like there should be a reasonable answer and I'm just not seeing it. If the system will not recognize any usb drive at all, how can I update BIOS?

With MSI's forums down until the 21st I do not have a direct resource. I was planning on building a secondary gaming/computing pc and I do not need to have usb 3.0 nor necessarily need to have the flash drive access, but obviously it would be nice to have! And this way I wouldn't essentially be throwing away money by selling it at a huge loss on Ebay. I just feel there has to be a way to fix this!

Some of the threads I had looked at and one thing that stands out is to either downgrade BIOS to 1.7(1.9 is currently installed). Since the pc will not recognize any flash drive I'm not sure how to do this. And with MSI's site down I cannot download their forum flash tool. I may just have to wait it out. I really really appreciate all of your responses in this matter!

Haha no offense taken! Ironically, I have an Asus P8Z77V-LK in my main gaming rig and recently two DIMM slots stopped working. Sent in for RMA and the return board had dead DIMMs! Long story short, they admitted they sent me a bad product and two months later no resolve. I've purchased many MSI products and have really liked them. Have purchased two of their most basic boards and both have been awesome. Hence my surprise at a mid level quality board having so many issues. Oh well, can't win them all right!
