Homebuilt Freezes on Startup

So I built this computer just a bit over a year ago now and I've been having a few problems and quirks lately, but none in the first about 9 months. So a month ago I added a 24" Asus Monitor, 1080p 1ms refresh. It's the VN247H, if that helps. A day or two after adding this is when the problems started. I now frequently get a random freeze. I say random because I don't necessarily have to be doing anything major, it's happened in games, high end and low end. It's happened while surfing in Chrome and Internet Explorer and even in such simple things as notepad. The computer will not seemingly slow, just black screen with no apparent response to anything. If I'm doing something with sound, the sound will play for a few seconds, then sort of buzz or hum. As I said before, this happens without sign, I have not been able to "cause" this to happen. It's completely random. Sometimes I can go a full 8 hour stretch without a single issue. Sometimes it will happen 10 minutes after boot.

So in the last couple days I've noticed a new problem starting. The computer will start up fine, quite fast as usual. I go to open a desktop folder, say, for example, My Pictures, or Documents, or my Games folder and it will almost sort of freeze within the window, it will bump me back out to the "login screen" (only nothing actually pops up, just the standard blue screen like you'd normally see on startup) and then the desktop refeshes. I click the folder to open it up again, then it loads up almost instantly as it has done in the past. This problem happens on every single startup IF and ONLY IF I try to open a folder first after the computer boots completely. If I just click on Chrome or something, then a folder, everything works fine.

The first problem, I assumed was just my crappy temporary graphics card, thought maybe the monitor was too much for it. I have switch back to the old monitor and it still does it. The second problem sort of has me stumped.

My System Specs:
Asus Z87-A Motherboard
Intel i7 4770k OCed to 4.3 GHz
16 GB G.Skill Ripjaw X (Blue) 1600 Mhz
3 TB Toshiba HDD 64 MB Cache, 7200 RPM
XFX R7 260x 2 GB Double Dissipation Edition
XFX 850w Pro Series 80+ Gold PSU
Cooler Master Haf 932 Advanced Blue Edition
Windows 8.1 64-Bit OEM

I'd really just like some direction in where to start my search. I've scanned several forum posts to no avail for a fix for any of my problems.

Thanks for any help in advance.

everything has been updated, and I've even tried rolling back the bios. I'm current on all my windows updates as well as everything I've got on my computer. I'm a bit OCD about updates haha. As far as the RAM goes being setup correctly, I'm not really sure what you mean beyond being clicked in all the way. It's XMP RAM, 4 dimms, 8,8,8,24, not exactly sure the model beyond what I've already listed, also that it's 2x 8GB (2x4gb) kits.

There is another tidbit of a problem that I have forgot to mention. When I first set this rig up, I had originally intended on running multiple 1 TB drives but my GF surprised me and bought me a Toshiba 3 TB drives for Christmas. I had not researched much into bigger drives, nor did I realize that there was a difference, other than the size of course. I set everything up, everything ram smoothly, it all booted nicely, windows took no time at all to install. I was happy. So I was tinkering around, installing new programs and going through all the new stuff that came with all my hardware. I realized I was not able to access all 3 TB of space. I did some searching and asus had a solution. They had a feature, either from the MOBO or a program that allowed me access to store data in that hidden TB of space. I never set it up because it seemed kind of complicated and I wanted to play with my new toy at the time.

As I sit here typing this, I'm backing up each and every file from my hard drive. I'm going to try a complete whipe and fresh install of windows in UEFI mode and GPT Mode. I'm doing some searching now to see if there is anything else that I need to get this as my main boot drive.
