I'm trying to (as inexpensively as I can) build a second small case that I can put on my desk in addition to my current PC. My current rig has 2x5.25in bays, and I would like to have about 5 more. I found this on amazon, and thought I was on the right track:

However, I started thinking about how I would connect 5 optical drives to my motherboard and I got a headache.

I have an Asus z87pro LGA 1150mobo, and can't figure out if it is compatible with an eSata multiplier, but that route is expensive as well.

If I build this optical drive array out of a duplicator case or a micro atx or whatever, what options do I have for connecting it to my main pc? USB3.0 would be my obvious method of choice, but I doubt that's possible, considering I still have to connect all of the new drives via Sata. Could I network it like a NAS? Probably not too effective for DVD and Blu Ray burners. Help me out Internet friends!

You could connect them by buying a pci to sata adapter, that would mean running wires from your pc out. May I ask why you need 5 drives exactly?
Not to mention you'll have to run power from your psu to them as well.

I personally would not try to run 5 drives at once in a separate case but Im sure you can.
