Hello everyone, I plan on building a desktop that will be used only for gaming and that will replace my current (dying) gaming laptop which has begun to dip below 60 FPS in BF4 (low settings). Since I'm moving and since GTA V, Far Cry 4, and other awesome games are being released around now, I think this is the perfect time to build a somewhat future-proof gaming desktop. Initially, I restricted myself to spending only $1000, but now that I've actually started searching and choosing parts, I figured it would be more practical to spend an extra $100. With that being said, the parts I'm comfortable with so far are:

  • MSI Computer Corp. AMD Radeon R9 290 Gaming OC 4GB (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HPS4AFG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2NG4HB43UEDVL)
    Intel Core i5-4690K Processor 3.5 GHz LGA 1150 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KPRWB9G/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1BVYXEL822RF0)
    SeaSonic 650-Watt ATX12V/EPS12V (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00918N4A0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER)
    Kingston HyperX FURY 8GB Kit (2x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J8E8ZLK/ref=ox_sc_a...)
    WD Blue 1 TB Desktop Hard Drive: 3.5 Inch, 7200 RPM, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64 MB Cache - WD10EZEX (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088PUEPK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER)

For the case, I had a few in mind, such as the Phanteks Enthoo Pro Full Tower (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K6S1B3Q/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3C4FQQQXYGWLL&coliid=I18NOQQTGWXBS1&psc=1) and the Corsair 450D (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I6BJ8MQ/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3C4FQQQXYGWLL&coliid=I1OHFL3U65FA7R). Both cases have great airflow and look gorgeous, but I like the looks of the Phanteks slightly more and I think it would allow better cable management over the 450D. I may even do Crossfire in the future also.

For the monitor, I was looking at a few, namely the Asus VS248H-P 24-Inch Full-HD LED-lit LCD Monitor, the Acer G246HL Abd 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor, and the BenQ Gaming Monitor RL2455HM (24-Inch LED). I'm not sure which one I prefer mainly because I don't really know much about monitors, but I do know that I want a matte 24-inch 1080p display at anything under $200. I would prefer a 60hz monitor because I want to max out all of the games I'll be playing, so I'll only get around 60fps, but if u think I should go higher then feel free to say so.

Finally, I don't know ANYTHING about motherboards, but I do know that I plan on replacing it when I upgrade my build, so can u guys please suggest one for $120 or under..I really don't want to exceed $120. Also, I plan on OC'ing my GPU and CPU.

You should get the Phanteks, as for the motherboard you should get a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-GAMING. It's 129 dollars so it's 9 dollars more that you wanted but if you can live with that, then you should definitely go with this mobo because it's good for overclocking.

Hi, its a pretty decent build, I would suggest a bit more powerful Power supply especially for that graphics card, but the rest looks perfect, here is two motherboards under $120 for a 1150 socket and for gaming (assuming that's what you want to do)

MSI ATX DDR3 2400 LGA 1150 Motherboards Z97 PC MATE:
http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Motherboards-Z97-PC-MATE/dp/B00K23BW70/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1418455888&sr=8-14&keywords=1150 ($105)

MSI ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Motherboards H97 GAMING 3:
http://www.amazon.com/MSI-DDR3-2600-Motherboards-GAMING/dp/B00K23BUJK/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1418455907&sr=8-5&keywords=1150+gaming ($120)

I heard bad review on Asus motherboards and have a few friends that are self not impressed, but their ROG series is excellent, if you can get a ROG mobo your awesome.

Here is also a 750watt PSU I would recommend with your build, though a 650w will do the job:

thanks for the reply! but I've already purchased and built my desktop a few days ago. the 970 is dead silent and chews BF4 alive (80-100+ FPS Ultra) and there is minimal heat under load. overall i'm happy with this setup and the reason why I went with a 550w was to save money and for it to be more efficient. now i'm hearing that going with a psu with way more headroom is better, but i still think my decision was a good one. my plan is to add another 970 in about 3 or so years and also a new PSU around 850w and also some other stuff

Well that is awesome, I wouldnt have thought that PSU would accomadate a monster system such as yours but, look I was wrong, yeah I have a not so silent R9 290x but it gives me around 100fps on Ultra, but I also have 6 fans built into my PC which is quite noise :p but O like my system. Happy Holidays and Happy Gaming :)

Well a trusted source said that u only needed 500w for one 970 but for a R9 290x which consumes way more power u needed way more wattage :p Even tho my MSI gtx 970 is quiet, my front 2 LED fans SickleFlow 120 and rear fan that came with case is somewhat noisy, but not overbearing.
Imo the 290x is almost unbeatable for its price, the drawback tho is the noise, pwer consumption and heat, which will force u to invest in better cooling and higher watage psu, which to some may be worth it but to me I decided not to go with the 290 (non x) because i wanted to do dual GPU in the future and i think 290 crossfire would've ran too hot and was just not ideal..
Also, dude did u know u can unpark ur cores on ur CPU to gain more fps in games? I used to get like 78 FPS on average on BF4 Ultra, now I get like 90+ even with 16x Anisotropic filtering (which I recently applied). It's crazy dude! U should check it out, it's completely safe :) Happy holidays and gaming to u too :)
