Last year I got a Seagate 4Tb external for my husband, last week he tells me that after he brings it home from work one day it just stopped working. So I take it, try some different cords, and it refuses to power up or do anything. I pulled off the base, and hooked it directly into my computer. now I hear it running, it spins away like everything is fine, no strange noises. However it does not show up anywhere in "My Computer" or the Device Manager.

I even tried running CHKDSK on it, but since it does not show up I just tried several letters with the constant message of "The system cannot find the drive specified". I believe it reads it as something, because when I first plugged it in I got the BSOD with kernal_data_inpage_error. Taking it to a professional is not an option at the moment, as all quotes I have gotten have been over 400 dollars. So any suggestions would be great on how to get to this stuff before I have to send the thing back for a replacement.

Update: Downloaded and loaded up Ubuntu, but no sign of the drive. I cannot find it in the boot menu either. Am I out of options?

The External HDD's have a board that the hdd plugs in to, then you plug your usb into the board and into your PC. This has happened roughly 6 times in the past two months so it isn't a normal problem, but if you listen VERY carefully and you DO NOT hear clicking, it could possibly be the board inside.

If you plug the hard drive directly into the computer, (not USB but directly via SATA), can you see if it is detected in the BIOS? If so, then the drive should still be "working", if not, the drive might have possibly died.

@Galadreal, can you show us the contents of sector 0? This will tell us if the data is accessible or whether the drive has a physical problem. You could use a disc editor such as DMDE (freeware).

Can you retrieve the drive's SMART report with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo?

http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html

Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.

Can you upload detailed photos of the external board? Sometimes there is an easy DIY fix. I could help you with that.
