RAM compatibility, specific question

Hi all,

I currently have 4GB installed (2x2), and have two slots open. I want to upgrade the RAM, but not sure about two things.

First, can I add a pair that's NOT the same size as the first? I'd like to add 2 4GB, for a total of 12GB.

Second, I currently have these:

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM
• DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
• Timing 7-8-7-24-2N
• Cas Latency 7
• Voltage 1.6V

And want to know if they'll play nice with these:

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-8GBXM
• Cas Latency: 7
• Voltage: 1.5V
• Multi-channel Kit: Dual Channel Kit
• Timing: 7-8-8-24
• Model #: F3-12800CL7D-8GBXM

I know the new ones will work with my motherboard, but not sure about their timings being one off, and the voltage difference as well.

Thanks,
Jack

Back to my opening statement "any time you mix packages of DRAM it can be and often is problematic, even two of the same exact sets." - no guarantees! If you do try and have any problems give me a shout, I've been working heavily w/ GSkill sticks for years now and can normally get them to play if they don't seem to want to.

Thanks, Tradesman1. So I've heard - and I'd like to confirm: if I'm less ambitious and get the exact same RAM I have now, size, timings, model and all, I'm fairly safe. I'd end up with 8GB instead of 12. Does that sound right?

Hey, I have the same RAM as you 2 x F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM and was going to make the same purchase you mentioned for the 2 x F3-12800CL7D-8GBXM sticks. What was the outcome? Did everything work for you? I just want to make sure its safe before making the purchase. Thanks.

Hello! I ended up getting another pair of 2x2GB, same kind as before. After researching, I decided there wouldn't be any real benefit for me to have 12 vs. 8. That being said, I did notice a difference between 4 and 8, especially in video editing.

Sorry I wasn't any help on the 12GB situation, though.
