should i go with a fx8350 or i5 4460 for a budget gaming pc build ?

Solution
ill just put my .02 in here, I have the FX 8320 @ 4.3 Ghz (hyper 212 evo) and I play all my games at 1080p either on high or ultra with ease. My GPU holds me back a bit if anything (HD 7870). Gaming is getting more multithreaded and the FX might not be the best gaming chip right now but it certainly holds its own. For many tasks like integer math, physics based operations, even sse (video encoding decoding etc) the FX 8320 (even at stock turbo) trades blows with an i7 3770/4770. In single threaded performance clearly the intel whoops on the FX.

Considering the FX 8320 can be had for 110$ on slickdeals right now and 120$ normally it really is the best deal (especially if you planned on OCing anyway)

If we're talking purely gaming, then without question it's the 4460. Newer architecture, much much much stronger single core performance, which in gaming is the key turner. If we're talking things like rendering, or even something as simple as unpacking files I'd look to the FX processor for more longevity in terms of cores.

If you live near a micro center, I'd totally take a trip there and pick up a 4690K for around $190

As of now the intel will whoop on the FX is some games, but for the most part they will be neck in neck. Well see how DX12 plays into this though, if games were properly designed to run on 8 cores then clearly the FX will whoop on the intel quad core any day. But this isn't easy to do so efficiently and would require a lot of re working of code to get done. (insert lazy developer joke here).

But its been said already so ill just repeat it as its the best answer yet. Intel for PURELY gaming and general use and the FX 8core for gaming + rendering + heavy multitasking.

Even if you were going to go with AMD, it would be foolish to get the FX8350 since the FX8320 exists. Have a look!

The FX8320 and FX8350 are the same exact cpu. The FX8320 allows you to get a much better video card.

I'm not a fan boy. I'm a what works best boy.

I almost always side with an AMD graphics solution as they typically win my heart with their price per performance ratio being so spiffy. Whereas AMD. More efficient IPC (instructions per clockcycle).

Basically they can do much more at 3.4Ghz than amd can do at the same.

AMD try to compensate by adding more cores but this only helps in highly threaded apps which definitely aren't games. Which means an overall faster / more powerful CPU without resorting to increasing the frequency to get excellent performance. Intel's design also allows for a much more power efficient CPU. For example, I believe when a Core i5-3570k and FX-8350 are both running at stock speed with a 100% load, the FX-8350 consumes about 50w - 60w more than the Core i5.

Gaming wise not much of a difference. 8350 overall will give you more confidence in overall computing usage over an i5. Wattage should not be look as a big deal. every year something more efficient will come out. If I run a budget pc and want the best bang, I would logically go with AMD. You're advising the man to go with an intel i5 when the other option useful for overall computing performance..

It really doesn't matter, as he shouldn't go with either option. If he wants to FX then he'd be best off going with the 8320 and overclocking it to match 8350/8370. If i5 is the route, I'd look into getting a 4570 or 4590 if stock clocks are all he'd be managing. Again I'd take either of them over the FX counterpart for the various reasons listed before

Agree, thats why I always advise people who build a rig with a budget of 1k below to go with AMD... 1.2 to 5k go with intel i7.
