I am looking for a $300-$500 gpu, I have looked into it a bit and couldn't decide between r9 290/290x, gtx 780, or gtx 970. Please help me decide.

I looked into the gtx 980 but I don't know if I wanna put that much $ into my gpu. Any Suggestions?

gtx 980 isn't the best bang for buck by far. It's more for bragging rights.

You should be looking at a 290x or gtx 970. These two are of comparable speed. The difference? The 970 is more energy efficient. If you can get a 970 for the same price or even a bit more than a 290x, it's worth it.
