My $1000(ish) Gaming Build (AUS)

Solution

Looks good! Getting a GTX 970 would be worth it, if you were buying your parts in USD. $500 AUD is too much for a GTX 970. If you're looking to upgrade, I'd suggest getting a second R9 280 some time in the future when you feel like your rig needs more muscle. Another alternative would be getting a R9 290 now - if you decide to get a 280 now, you're better off doing two-way R9 280 CrossFire as the next upgrade.

I'd stay with this current build. Just make sure your case has enough space for a second card and moves air efficiently (both of which should be fine of what I've seen of the case).

Get at least 7200RPM HDD.

Chose 850W PSU because it will be enough power if you ever decide to you want more GPU firepower and get a second R9 290 and use CrossFire.

The motherboard also supports CrossFire and I made sure all the interior components were black.

-Any questions?

Firstly, can i still use the S340 Mid Tower case? I prefer it and its cheaper.

Secondly, is the R9 280 going to be sufficient for the type of gaming I'm doing? I want a good graphics card, but i'm really wary of overdoing it.

Definitely! The Phantom 410 has better airflow which is why I swapped them.

I don't know what type of gaming you're doing. For 1080p, it'll do very well. The R9 280 is the most reasonably priced GPU in Australia, in terms of AUD to USD conversion. The NVIDIA cards in Australia are really expensive.

Here's some benchmarks you can look at: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2014/05/19/amd-radeon-r9-280-review-feat-xfx/5

Ah okay, i'll be using it for gaming for things such as modded Skyrim and the newest FC4, CoD etc. All the newer games. Will it be fine for that? And be okay into the future? Benchmarks are good for comparison of graphics cards but i'm unsure for how good i'll actually be needing.

Yeah, a lot of the time what drags the FPS down is how much AA you use. Just go through the video settings and tweak around until you get 60+ FPS (if you weren't hitting it right away) and you should be good to go. It should be fine for modded Skyrim, the 3GB VRAM will come in handy. And there's no telling what the future holds so no guarantees there.

Current build ^. Is it possibly worth grabbing a pentium or even the 6300 and OC it and grab a 970?
