i have a ati 4870 and i would like to make it work with my HP laptop ( intel i7 2.4, 12gb ram)
i was wondering if the performance would be decent from from 4870? please help ...

I assume it's a desktop 4870, that means it would need PCExpress adapters just to connect to the laptop. These adapters are not cheap, I think they're somewhere in the £200-300 range. That's not to mention whether your laptop even supports PCExpress. No, I'd be looking to either get a new laptop or build a desktop.

Likely not well as the express card slot has only 1 pcie lane bandwidth. I tried a similar thing on an old dell laptop (core 2 duo) and it allowed it to play skyrim on lowest settings while it could not before but I think the onboard graphics you have are nearly as good as a 4870 with only 1 slot worth of bandwidth.
