Can I use my HDTV as a monitor for my gaming rig which I've just built?

I was wondering if it's possible to use my TV as a monitor for a freshly built rig. I've tried connecting the GPU and the Mobo to the TV with an HDMI but I can't get it to show up on screen. Would I need a VGA or DV-I cable for it to work or is it impossible to set up a TV as a monitor with a freshly built computer that doesn't have Windows installed yet?

Solution
I would start by taking the video card OUT and connecting to the motherboard video. See if you can get the BIOS screen (or boot failure) screen to display.

CPU: i5-4690k
MotherBoard: Asus Z97-Pro
GPU: EVGA GTX 970

Tried to connect the HDMI to the port on the gpu at first, got nothing. Also tried the Mobo's HDMI port on the I/O shield and still got nothing. Kept switching through the inputs on my TV, it's a Hisense, from HDMI 1-3 but still no luck. This is my first build so I'm hoping it's just a simple mistake on my part xD

And yes, the computer is turned on.

Great news fellas, turns out I didn't install the RAM properly which is why it wasn't booting. Had to jam those bad boys with less delicacy then I thought I needed lol. Thanks for the help fellas, glad it did actually turn out to be a simple mistake :)
