Hello,

I haven't build a PC since '07, and I am pretty darned rusty, all things considered. All the same, after doing a fair bit of research I've come up with a build that, to me, seems alright. I live in Canada, so keep that in mind when looking at the merchants I've selected, et cetera.

I will be using this rig for editing and coloring high-bitrate 1080p footage (or, conversely, 2k and 4k footage for 1080p output). Very little, if any, gaming will happen on this PC.

Some burning questions: Do I need to get any extra fans/separate cooling? I do not plan on overclocking. Since my case is from '07, will there be any big compatability issues there? Is the GTX 980 worth the money, or should I get a 970 and use the extra cash elsewhere? Is it possible to connect ESATA to this thing?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

This would all go into my Coolermaster Centurion 5 tower (http://www.coolermaster.com/case/mid-tower/centurion-5/) that I have already, with my pre-existing 750w power supply.

Solution
The i7 is a high wattage CPU. The lowe end H81 boards are meant for lower end CPUs. You will be stressing the VRMs much more than on a proper board for the build. The board will have a much higher change of failing early.

Get an H97 board and a gtx970.

Hello, and thanks for the reply;

I have a Corsair TX750w. It has barely ever been used, and by all appearances is in good working order.

That is great news!

As far as replacing the motherboard goes, what is the reasoning on that? I ask out of a lack of education on my part.

Done. I'm used to Windows 7, but it seems both are within spitting distance of the same price in Canada, so no reason not to upgrade.

Yeah, and with Windows 8's optimizations with boot times and resource usage it sounds like a Win-win.
