Hi my componants arrived today and thought id try my build (first build iv done in years). When i first built it it booted up and gave me an error of the ram in slot b not passing the cpu check. so i tried each ram stick (its a 2 x 8gb kit) indivdually in slot a and both were fine. i then tried to put the 2 in again and got the same error, swapped both sticks around and still got a slot b error. i then tried updating the bios via instant flash to the newest version off the asrock website and still got the same response (i thought you never know it might make a difference). After that i hit googled and found some similiar problems on here with answer stating things like the heatsink on the cpu might be on to tight, the power button not being connected properly and bent pins on the mobo, so i took the cpu fan off and took the cpu out and all seemed fine put the cpu back in and the cpu heatsink fan (its a stock intel one btw) back on (its on secure) reconnected the cpu fan lead and checked the power button lead which was seems on properly but i disconnected it and put it back on. Now when i turn it on im getting no post screen and basically nothing the power light is flashing the cpu fan isnt spinning. theres no beeps or anything like that just nothing.

the build is

intel i7 4790
asrock h81m motherboard
16gb (2 x 8gb kit) of hyperx fury blue 1600mhz ddr3
kfa2 gtx770
aerocool 600w psu
2tb seagate hdd
and a samsung dvd drive

everything seems connected fine, i dont understand why it was booting beforeand i could get post and into bios and bring up the windows 8.1 installer (i would of just installed windows and got on with it if the ram wasnt coming up with an error in the first place) and now nothing

any help would be really appreciated

update: my power button is flashing when i turn it on and there is a ticking noise which coincendetally is the same time as when the lights flashing

Solution

Yes I suppose the bent socket pins are the main issue to suspect. As last effort, you may try straightening the pins a bit better following the adivce on the thread to try doing it successfully. Or take the supplier's advice and RMA it.

You have PSU symptoms*. Is it new?, what make and model?... Recheck all power connections... including the AC cable, power to drives, and mobo 24 pin and CPU 4/8 pin connectios, and don't forget the PSU switch. If nothing yet, reset the BIOS removing the AC power cable, remove the button cell battery and wait 5 to 10 minutes before putting the battery back on. If nothing, try a different PSU.

*Or mobo but PSU is more likely.

yes i have not long tried this and the cpu is fine. after taking the cpu out to put in his board i noticed a few bent pins on the motherboard which my gf has straightened out with a needle and some tweezers. now on start up the cpu fan is moving slightly forward and back just slightly sort of rocking which is the ticking noise i could hear before and then after about 10 seconds it is spinning as normal. still nothing on screen though

edit: i have taken the battery on the motherboard out for 10 minutes and put it back in and tried again and still nothing

Check these customer reviews on the ASRock ASRock H81M-HDS LGA 1150 mATX Intel Motherboard. Read the guy that says: "No, I do not recommend this product"... Seems that on this motherboard the 24 PSU pins are to small for the PSU connector. See if that's the case with your motherboard.

Other posts on different forums commenting on the same mobo issue with the CPU fan working for only a second, the PSU turned out to be the cause. So the apparent cause is power not reaching the motherboard. or not enough power to make it work.

its a slightly different board its just a h81m without the -hds although im assuming there pretty similiar. thing is iv tested the psu in another system and its fine and iv also tested a known working psu in this system and still nothing. im assuming those bent pins on the motherboards cpu socket is the culprit even though my gf straightened them as best she could. the supplier has told me i can RMA the motherboard which it looks increasingly like it is so i guess il try that. unless anyone thinks the problem lies with the cpu?

i have stripped the machine down to bare essentials (motherboard cpu ram and psu and still nothing)
