Hello,

If the drive is making clicking noises you should not attempt any kind of software recovery, especially if your data is important. If it's only clicking when connected to the laptop – it may not be getting enough power. Are you using a USB hub? If you are, have you tried without it? Also – is there any difference when the laptop is connected to a power supply? You can try to run your manufacturer's disk check utility, but it puts some stress on the drive. Do that when you've already tried all other options. When you connect the drive to your computer – can you open or copy any of the files and folders? You can also try to make an image of the drive via software, there are many available.

All in all, if all else fails, the safest way to go is data recovery company, especially if your data is more valuable than the cost of such service.

Hope that was helpful, Citizen_WD

Hi qarqa!
I am not a computer experienced person an therfore not sure wether I understand your problem correctly.
I have a Laptop with Windows Vista preimium and several newer and older seagate external hard drives.
I use Norton 360 Backup Software as well as Windows Vista Backup Software on them.
I was able to see the files but was unable to access the files until i realized that i had logged into my computer under a different user account name. (I have several user accounts with diffeent account names on my laptop). Make sure that you use the same user account name for backup as well as recovery as well as just opening files. Otherwise access might be denied.
On that note: If you have Norton 360 installed and want to do a restore (no matter what backup software you use), go offline and disable "tamper protecion" which you find by clicking the "settings" tab.
When "tamper protection" is enabled the restores often dont work.
