dual 256MB pc3200 modules in i865p chipset Dell laptop. Got a pair of 512 micron modules of same spec to upgrade and will not boot with either or both.

With one of the old modules in one slot and a new one in the other it will get to the bios memory check but fail with memory errors. The errors shown indicate one address getting the expected result of another address that in turn reports the correct result for the previous location. Bios terminates at this point with an option to go to bios.

Seems like a bank addressing problem with these 2 different unmatched modules and the error is in the new 512 part. Just thinking out loud here, such a problem should not occur, just dual bank operation suspended.

Reversing these modules does not yield a boot at all so it seems the module first addressed being the old working module allows boot entry. These are compatible modules as far as specs go as far as I can see. Am I missing something?? Same spec, double size, half of maximum allowed.

Can both replacements be bad or are there compatibility issues in these identically specd. parts??

Hello,

Have you tried installing a single Micron 512MB module and checked if that worked? If no, then try it with both the modules but individually and make sure the second slot is empty. That would help you to determine if both are bad or if one of them is. If both work individually and not together then try a BIOS update. Even if that doesn't fix then the probably memory rank issues or simply the memory might be bad. BTW, your laptop supports upto 2GB and i'm curious why not make the jump to 2GB rather than 1GB?

Hope that helps your cause.
