Hi all,
I need a decent monitor for ultra quality gaming at 1080p resolution. ( I can't find 1440p or 120hz monitors in my country ) So what do you recommend me? IPS Monitor or PLS monitor? 24 inch or 27 inch? Thank you very much.

GTX 970
MSI Z97 Gaming 5

Hi,

*The first thing you need to understand is that monitors like IPS that are high quality tend to have a higher response rate (the time to change pixel color) which means you get ghosting. Due to the current technology that also means lower REFRESH RATES as well.

PHOTO professionals all use IPS, PLS type monitors. Serious "gamers" use 144Hz TN panels. People on lower budgets choose 60HZ TN panels. Some people who game but care more about the viewing angle and overall color still go with IPS.

For example:

Monitor A (IPS, 8ms, 60Hz):
- better color
- less "viewing angle" distortion
- more GHOSTING (blurring of moving objects)

Monitor B (TN, 2ms, 60Hz to 144Hz):
- color not quite as good
- issues with viewing angle distortion

- issues with viewing angle distortion
- minimal ghosting

Now monitors vary within this.

IPS panels don't come at high refresh rates as I said.

*So basically you need to decide which way you want to go. I would suggest looking at the best quality "TN" panel with 2ms or less RESPONSE TIME since gaming is your focus.

VSYNC can't be simplified quite in that way.
If you have VSYNC OFF in the game then the amount of screen tearing depends on the refresh rate you have the monitor set to and the FPS the graphics card is outputting.

For example, if had a 60Hz monitor, VSYNC OFF and output about 60FPS then you might observe almost NO tearing if the update is mostly happening at the top or bottom.

However, if you were outputting about 144FPS on the same 60Hz monitor you are averaging 2.4 updates per monitor refresh which shows an incredible about of screen tearing.

*Not sure of your country, but perhaps you can use the USA site for PCPartpicker as a guide?
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/monitor/

Get a monitor with 6ms or less RESPONSE TIME.

Example of IPS: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/lg-monitor-23mp55hqp

Example of TN: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/samsung-monitor-t22c350nd

These are not necessarily the best monitors but I don't know what you have available.

**FYI, G-SYNC monitors are currently expensive and not yet available for IPS panels however they give the SMOOTHEST game experience so I'd look into that in the future.

You need to read up more on G-Sync if that's what you think.

For one thing, if you have a 144Hz monitor (to benefit from less LAG) then you'll get SCREEN TEARING unless you have VSYNC ON and can output above 144FPS.

With G-Sync the monitor updates when the GPU tells it too so you don't have to worry about constantly staying above a certain target which is often near impossible.

I dont ever get tearing issues maybe its just the 1ms response time. I have 3 248qe with 1 that has gsync in it. It was no use to me.

This is going beyond the question asked so if you want to discuss you can PM me. I don't understand how you have no screen tearing issues though and RESPONSE TIME has absolutely nothing to do with it. I do play games with minimal screen tearing if I disable VSYNC but I have several that just look horrible.

Update: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/nvidia_g_sync_review_guide,6.html

That's the same monitor you have and he says:
"but once you experienced it'll be hard to go back to a regular screen. The visual gaming experience is a lot better, but realistically gaming the old-fashioned way with vsync on honestly works just fine for me as well. However playing games without input lag, screen tearing and VSYNC pulsing simply is an improvement of the game experience. As such we think G-Sync is the next logical step in the evolution of PC gaming. "

and

"I like G-Sync, I really really do like it "

So apparently he can see a difference. Anyway CU.
