PLEASE HELP ME I WANT TO BE AS PREPARED AS POSSIBLE!

XD That made me laugh and then face palm myself XD If I had experience with overclocking the new Core iX series i'd help. If it was a Core2 or older or AMD i could help. Maybe someone else will come by. But search around here. I know there are threads on overclocking.

Just remember. Every CPU, Motherboard, Memory, GPU, PSU ect can only take so much so your results can and will vary from everyone else.

Forget looking on youtube, I can't believe the members of our community are referring you there. I will tell you how to OC in 3 steps. If i can do it you can do it.

1. Go into the BIOS and set your clock speed ( I have mine at 4.5ghz, AIR COOLED. I think its a big deal.) Start at 4.1
2. Set the voltage at 1.25 ( I have the same CPU so I know this to be correct.)
3. Run the INTEL XTU TORTURE TEST, DO NOT USE PRIME95!!

people say that prime95 is not recommended for haswell based cpus "1. Stop using AIDA, Prime 95 or anything else like that. Download RoG Real Bench, HWiNFO64 and Intel ETU." do you agree? i want to learn as much as i can before its time to build

Intel XTU is all I use. It offers real world stress tests. Personally I've never messed with Aida64 I don't want to shell out cash for a stress testing product. I've heard good things about it. For your GPU make sure you download "Heaven".

HELLO, in the coming weeks i will be attempting to build my very first pc! this rig is going to be primarily used for gaming with streaming/video editing from time to time. IM A NOOB SO I NEED AS MUCH INFORMATION AS I CAN GET ON HOWTO OVERCLOCK.

You're concerned about overclocking and haven't even built the machine yet?

That's like putting the cart before the horse, wouldn't you agree?

What does attempting to build mean?

Is attempting compared to try?

Duplicating someone else settings is not going to teach you anything about overclocking that's a direct pass to ignorance, "Do Not Pass Go, And Do Not Collect 200 Dollars".

It was already suggested studying some guides so you could learn, and I 2nd that!

There's a big difference between someone amazed that they managed to overclock their setup and want to share it, vs those of us that know what we're doing!

I was actually intrigued by your thread title, "TEACH ME HOW TO OVERCLOCK! please lol ", it made me think that's refreshing!, someone that actually wants to learn and not take the quick path and learn nothing.

The title should have read Teach Me How To Overclock that my H100i will allow! please lol, because your cooling will be your overclock limiter!

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2196038/air-cooling-water-cooling-things.html

How far you want to overclock is an important question, do you even know what the CPU is capable of vs the cooling it takes to get there?

Guides are written by those of us that know what we're doing and have decided to share that information with others, a lot of time is invested in all the guides out there on the net, and right here at Toms Hardware.

It is a step by step process to help you reach your goal, that's why getting solid information under your belt is the foundation you'll be working from, and adding information daily to what you learn.

If you decide to take the quick path at least make sure your system is 100% rock solid stable, because even identical hardware does not overclock the same.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2345618/reaching-cpu-overclocking-stability.html

I'm not trying to offend you, I am trying to get you to think of what's the most important information to begin with like getting your machine built would be my #1 priority.

im one to do as much research as possible before doing something i have never done before! it took me a few weeks to come up with my components. i have done a lot of research on the parts i picked as well as overclocking. i have read and watched multiple guides multiple times over. cpu specific, motherboard specific and general overclocking guides highlighting what settings need to be changed and etc. i understand every cpu is different and vary when it comes to overclocking limits even if it is the same model(luck of the draw) i also understand that your cooling solution has a big impact on the limit. for you to assume that i want to take the easy way out and to simply copy someones settings or build thinking that i will get the same results is insulting. for you to assume that i have done half A** research is insulting. i would not have even made this thread if that were the case as the motherboard that i have chosen provides an ai overclock tuner, i could simply use that and be done! my main priority is learning, understanding, and getting valuable information from experienced people before diving head first into something. i have watched dozens of builds be completed and i will continue to watch dozens more until i am completely comfortable with taking on the task, the same goes for overclocking. I say attempt because i am going to try to do it, because i don't know how successful i will be being that it is my first time. what is the problem with that? you say you felt refreshed because you thought and i quote "...someone that actually wants to learn and not take the quick path and learn nothing." yes i want to learn, i want to learn all i can before my try at overclocking i want to learn all i can before the pc is built. why is that an issue? how can you be upset with me because i want to do what was oh so refreshing to you which is take my time to learn? i dont understand that at all. when i open up that bios i want to know exactly what i am doing and exactly what i am looking at. if you want to be a surgeon do you open someone up and learn as you go? no you do not!you learn everything you can before you make your first attempt! that is exactly what i am doing here. Your signature says the most important part to overclocking is understanding. I WANT TO UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING BEFORE I EVEN GET TO HOVER MY MOUSE OVER THE BIOS INTERFACE.

YES I WATCH/READ OVERCLOCKING GUIDES TO GET AN IDEA OF WHAT THE BIOS LOOKS LIKE. TO GET AN IDEA OF WHAT SETTINGS ARE BEING CHANGED AND WHY THEY ARE BEING CHANGED. I CAN WATCH 20 GUIDES AND IT WOULD NOT BE ENOUGH. I WANT MULTIPLE OPINIONS I WANT RELIABLE SOURCES TO DELIVER INFORMATION TO ME! I WANT TO KNOW AND LEARN AS MUCH AS I CAN BEFORE THE PARTS ARE STARING ME IN THE FACE. I WANT SOME Q AND A! guides do not provide that forums do! OF COURSE PEOPLE WILL RECOMMEND READING AND WATCHING GUIDES THAT IS COMMON SENSE! I DO THAT WITH ALL OF MY FREE TIME I SPEND HOURS DOING THAT! i want opinions on what are the best ways to stress test. HOW LONG IS LONG ENOUGH, WHAT PROGRAMS ARE THE BEST TO USE WHEN STRESS TESTING. EVERYONE HAS DIFF OPINIONS AND I WANT TO HEAR THEM ALL BECAUSE THAT IS HOW YOU DO RESEARCH. I WANT MULTIPLE OPINIONS! ONE PERSON SAYING USE X PROGRAM BECAUSE ITS THE BEST IS NOT ENOUGH TO SWAY ME IN A DIRECTION. i want experienced people to say to me yes here is how i do it. not so i can copy settings but so i can learn how they approach it. SO I LEARN HOW TO APPROACH IT. SO I LEARN WHAT TO TWEAK AND HOW TO TWEAK IT IF I GET BLUE SCREENED. thankfully i found someone. hcollet agreed to be my guru and i am oh so grateful for that! when the time comes we will chat and he will provide me with information when needed and until that time comes i will continue my research. im sorry for going on like that but come on dude...please dont assume things. i do not care for the back and forth either so please only comment back if you are willing to continue to aid me in my journey. thank you for the links i will add them to my bookmarks. feel free to shoot over some more

Admirable
lololololol.

This becomes a warzone.

Overclocking is pretty simple brother. hayzt.

Make sure you have a good cooler and a good mother board and a good PSU.

Then follow the guides, don`t be confused when your system crashes because it is part of OCING.

Relax, you`re doing fine.

i dont mean to come off rude but dude in my op i said "basically be my overclocking guru!! make me your pupil! school me! give me links or something idk!!!!". i did not say hey guys give me all of your settings so i can copy them i want the easy way out i need no information. If you look at my components you would see that i chose the z97-a mobo that comes with software to auto tune an overclock. if i wanted it easy i would use the 5-way optimization software but i know that it would raise the cpu voltage higher than needed so i dont want to do that. how do i know this? oooooh i did research!!! i didnt come here blind! so insulting man but anyway ... thank you for the input!!for the cooler i went with the h100i so i know i will keep the temps low and as for the psu i chose a tier 1 class a psu(based on a tomshardware thread) lit should do well being that it is a platinum psu...looks like i did my research there also. yes i know passive aggressive but grrrrrr im a bit ticked off. :)

i went a tad bit over my budget but that is ok. i dont mind waiting a little longer to save if it means having more performance and quality parts! BY THE WAY. is my choice of ram good? or would you recommend something else? like sniper or gskill x series?

lol its not that we are being rude (Well I don't have Core iX overclocking experience) but its the fact that doing a search on here you will find many how to's of overclocking. Some people don't like it when people post a thread and don't even try searching for other stuff.

Maybe you should reconsider the CPU you have chosen as the i7-4790K is stock clocked at 4ghz out of the box 500mhz more than what you are buying and presently on sale, whether you even overclocked it or not, would still be an option.

You say that you learn from forum members, but what you do not realize is you can be taking information, from someone that 2 weeks earlier knew less than you!

That's the problem with our forums today with all this 5 best answers = an expert!

We have an abundance of experts today, tripping over themselves to share the little they've learned, but they have no solid information foundation.

Those experienced here want to see you take the initial first steps, if you're serious about learning, and when you do your questions will change, as they will be more aimed at say, a better explanation of something you read in a guide that you need clarification on, and then we know you are seriously attempting to help yourself.

I closed my post with I am not trying to offend you, but apparently it did.

I wish you the best! Happy Holidays! And Good Luck To You!

FYI: Posting in all caps is the internet equality of screaming at someone, and most don't respond well to that because it comes across as very childish behavior, so for your own Toms forum longevity I suggest you read the rules as posting in all caps, is under the "Please Don't" section.

you are right i dont know the level of their expertise but they are willing to help lol its better than nothing i guess. i have looked at the i7 4790k before and decided to go with the lil bro because of my budget but i guess i can just save more for the boost in performance. when you overclock do you do it per core or do you sync all cores?
