Is my power supply dead?

I recently was opening up the side panel on my computer to check for dust and other debris inside my computer that needed cleaning. As I was sliding the door off every thing went black I heard a wierd noise and I can only think to describe it as a fictional laser sound. Also there was a very bad smell like something electrical was burning. Now whenever I press the power button (I have only pressed it twice since this happened) everything lights up for a spit second then I hear the noise again and one of the two times a tiny cloud of smoke either came from my psu or my gpu I couldn't tell. What I am asking is, is it my psu that is dead or is it the motherboard or what if anyone has any clue please help.

If the gpu is a concern, its the easiest to unhook, then stick your nose upto it. When electronic component go bad there is almost always a rather acrid smell, if you don't get that from the gpu, then remove the psu and take a good whiff by the fans. If that's the culprit, replace it, do not re-install. Would be nice if either one was under warranty.

Either way, once the bad component is replaced, do some stability checks like prime95 and kombuster, its possible that the bad unit could have damaged other parts.

Oh, and don't try to restart the pc till the offending part is located, that's just asking for trouble, especially if it is the psu.

Ok it is definitely my gpu that went bad, but I have a apu in my pc and when I remove the graphics card and try to boot it up it still just spins up for a split second then everything shuts off again but this time there is no smoke smell or noise. I am still very new to custom pc builds and this is actually my first one so I'm wondering if it can boot without a gpu and just apu. Also the card that fried itself was a galazy gt 640 and the power supply that may or may not be broken is a raidmax 700 watt power supply.

An AMD APU is a cpu and gpu in 1 chip, so yes you can most definitely boot up without a dedicated graphics card. I don't think I'd be wrong saying that the igpu is actually better than that gt640 for most applications.

What I find suspect is your psu. It's very low quality. It's very very possible the psu has damaged the gpu. You would be well advised to check the actual outputs with a multimeter, or failing that, take it to a shop or somewhere it can be tested. Psus of decent quality that are large enough to power your system easily can be bought for $30-$40, so it may be money better spent just scrapping the psu and buying better, since a shop may charge you that just for bench fee.

My best advice would be to spend some time and do some research. Read posts on similar problems, and get a working knowledge of what you are dealing with, and just what you own in your pc. That small bit of education will help you tremendously in figuring out some answers, as well as having the right questions.
