I am looking to into getting a new PC and have considered the i5-4690K and i7-4790K, I am just gonna be gaming so would it just be a waste of money to to go into the i7 region?

Actually hyper threading is not good for gaming it has been seen that hyper threading doesn't improve any gaming performance and in some cases it does reduces the FPS .
Here is a thread to back my statement.

The only real difference between an i5 and i7 in games is that the i7 will give you much better "Frame Time Variance" than the i5. As a result, stuttering will be much less noticeable.

For the average gamer, they probably won't even be able to tell the difference, so unless you're a pure enthusiast or are loaded with money, I'd go with the i5.

For gaming only, right now, I'd not go with i7, I don't think there are any/many games out there that uses hyperthreading, but if you plan to record/edit/render/higher overclock, then the 4790k is surely a great deal.
