Hello,

Here is the best comparison of the two motherboards:
http://game.msi.com/us/product/motherboard/z97-gaming/models

I had the chance to buy the Gaming 5 for $95 (after $10 rebate) or the Gaming 7 for $129 (after $10 rebate). I decided to go with the Gaming 7, because I felt the difference in price was small enough to not compromise my build with potential features that the 7 may have.

However, I did not have time to research the two beforehand, since I had already driven far to a Microcenter and found that there was a bundle deal with processor. Also if the processor matters in this debate, I got a 4790k.

Is someone here knowledgeable enough to tell me what the major differences between these two are? Some of those things, like PWM Phases for example, I am not knowledgeable in. Anything else that sticks out?

Was this the right purchase for $35 more?

Thank you very much for your help.

Z97 gaming 7 have more batter feature than Z97 gaming 5
...............................Z97 gaming 7........Z97 gaming 5
PWM phases...................12...........................8
PWM capacitors...........Hi-C CAP............Solid caps
SATA 3 PORT...................8 ..........................6
USB 3.0...........................8...........................4
BIOS SWITCH..................V...........................X
EASY BUTTON 3...............V...........................X

I have both board, both are good..but.. If I only have one choice,I would go Z97 gaming 7,because BIOS SWITCH is too important for me...

MSI Gaming 7 Advantages from website:

Illuminated PWM (+ for aesthetics)
12 PWM Phases (what is this?)
8 vs 6 Sata ports (dont care)
OC Genie 4 / ClrCMOS / Power / Reset on motherboard (dont plan on using this much)
USB Redrivers (what is this?)
Multi-Bios II (unsure what this is as well)
Displayport + 2 HDMI ports (will likely be using video card ports instead)

I'm having a hard time picking out what's worth $35 in there so I am hoping someone that knows more about the above things that I am not familiar with can help.

Is BIOS switch where you can have two separate BIOS and if one bricks you use the other? Or to have two different overclocks? How do you use it? Is it that you can choose one each time you boot up?

When one bricks, you can use another to boot.
Maybe it can use one different overclocks setting.
You have to choose one bios on motherboard before you boot up.
