It was working for years. Now the GUI won't launch. TM shows that the process is running. It will launch in Safe Mode. I assume something else is creating a conflict. How do I determine exactly what the problem is?

Solution
I"m going to have to write some tutorials on this, as it's far too much to type out. But the quick and dirty is you need to troubleshoot as follows:

Your start-up items - See if you can find an easy tutorial on MSConfig for this. You want to disable all startup items, and all 3rd party services under the services tab, reboot test issue. If doesn't come back, start enabling items till you find the culprit.

Device drivers can cause lots of weird behavior, boot to safe mode, disable any drivers in device manager you are able, test the issue again.

Try another user account, possibly something is corrupt in your profile.

IF you have a windows XP disc, then go to start, run, 'cmd', when command prompt opens, type 'SFC /scannow", windows...

IF you have a windows XP disc, then go to start, run, 'cmd', when command prompt opens, type 'SFC /scannow", windows will replace any crucial system files that are missing, or have been modified by other programs.

Never hurts to run a chkdsk on all your drives, and a virus scan online (don't depend on whatever you have installed)

Good Luck! O, one final note, if you can run system restore to when it worked, is the easiest method, but if it fixes it you will have no idea what caused it in the first place.
