Looking for an upgrade, Not sure what component should be first

Here's my current system
Intel i5-2400 CPU
Intel DP67BG MB
2x EVGA 550ti SLI GPU's
16GB RAM
Corsair RM 750 watt PSU

As you can see, some of my components are slightly outdated. I have a little money to work with, and I was thinking about upgrading something. I use the computer mainly for basic activities: schoolwork, web browsing, etc. I also enjoy gaming. The computer handles older games like Skyrim and Fallout with absolutely no problem, but has a tougher time with some newer games, and I would like to be able to play on multiple monitors, but can live with just 1. I also will use the computer a lot in the future for GIS work, but as I have only done some basic functions in that area, I have no idea how it handles more complex GIS work. I have come up with a few options and have been looking in to them, but I am open to other suggestions and am mainly just looking for opinions on what my system will benefit most from in terms of overall performance.

Some of the options I am considering:

-Replace mobo and upgrade to i7 4790 or 4790k -- Any thoughts on mobo's that might keep this cost down?
-Keep current mobo (which fits my color scheme, but not a huge issue) and upgrade to a i7 3770 or 3770k
-replace 2 550ti's with a GTX 970

So which of these options would get me the biggest overall performance boost, or do you think I should be looking at other options? Any feedback is greatly appreciated and I apologize if I have posted this in the wrong section.

i would def def definitely get a new video card first. the i5-2400 is still a pretty nice cpu and a single gtx 970 will be a very nice boost in performance over 2x 550Tis.

spending the money for a new cpu AND motherboard will not get you that much more performance in games vs a new gpu with your current setup.

I've kind of gotten the same impression that I would get the most bang for my buck by upgrading my gpu's. They seem to be my weakest components. On the other hand, they seem to mainly increase gaming performance and as a college student, I don't get to game as often as I would like and wasn't sure if the boost in processing power would help me more overall. But the more I think about it, the more I agree with you. I can't recall any time when I've pushed my CPU beyond its capabilities. I know I've hit my GPU's limits on several occasions.

Anyone else have any thoughts?
