Hello,

About 2 months ago, my wife was playing Binding of Isaac on my computer through Steam, and the computer locked up. Screen locked, no ctrl+alt+del or mouse movement or anything, just total lock. She powered it down by holding the power button, and when she powered it back up, it began to shut itself off within a few seconds. No POST, will not read the hard drive, nothing. Binding of Isaac is probably the least taxing game that I own, so I know it wasn't under any heavy load at the time.

Computer Handling and Info

The rig is only powered on when in use, all other times it is correctly shut down and left off. It is basically strictly for gaming. It is about 8 months old or so, all parts are brand new, and all parts purchased at same time from newegg.com. It has never overheated, and in its lifespan, has never even blue screened. It ran perfectly, then suddenly bricked. All parts are under warranty and barely old enough to collect any dust. All drivers were up to date.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. I left the computer unplugged and powered down overnight, seeing if maybe it had some static or buildup of some kind. The next day I powered it up, and no change. It powered itself down within a second or two.

2. I checked all of the wiring, unplugged and plugged everything back in, to ensure nothing came loose or had a bad connection. No change.

3. I took the GPU out, and tried again using onboard video. No change.

4. I completely disassembled the computer, and checked everything for damage of any description. The only odd flaw I could find was a strange mark behind a box labeled R68, which from what I've gathered is an inductor, on the motherboard. The CPU seems fine, no discolorations or burns as far as I can tell. GPU is fine, and memory seems fine.

5. I reassembled it to the motherboard, one stick of RAM, the CPU, the CPU heatsink, and OS drive. No change.

6. I swapped the memory to different slots, and tried different sticks. No change.

7. I bread-boarded the system, hoping that maybe it was a simple short or something. No change.

8. I took out the on board battery, put it back in. I shorted the pins to reset it, and still no change.

9. I called ASUS support on the motherboard. I had a similar issue occur when I first built the system. I had bought the same motherboard model, but open box, and pins were bent, which caused it to do literally the same thing. After 3 hours on the phone, they gave me an RMA code.

10. The motherboard came back. No information on what exactly they did, the RMA just says repair, thats it. It is the same motherboard, so whatever they did, it was apparently some kind of repair, if anything. I put it back together to just bare bones, and much to my surprise, no change.

11. I took out the PSU, shorted the power, and tested the pins with my multimeter. At 20, I could get absolutely nothing on screen. At 2, still nothing. Not until I went all the way down to 200m could I receive anything on the screen. This led me to believe the PSU failed. XFX seemed to agree, and gave me an RMA code.

12. PSU must have been labeled defective and unrepairable, because XFX sent me back a newer model, 80 Plus Gold rated, full modular version of what I previously had. I received this just today, just finished installing it. Put the computer back together, to bare minimum, and wouldn't you believe it? Nothing.

Now, my computer stays on instead of shutting down. However, no hard drive reading, no POST, no keyboard/mouse function, no video. It basically is doing the same thing, just now it stays on longer than a few seconds. I am in absolute frustration and confusion at this point, and clueless as to what the problem is here. I don't know what next to do, short of sending the CPU off for RMA if possible, and seeing if that solves the problem. Honestly, I haven't the foggiest clue what ASUS did, if anything, and this still seems like a motherboard issue, but by saying that I'm basically stating they did jack shit, which I hope would not be the case.

Any tips? Ideas? Suggestions? Opinions on parts and companies? Next steps? Pretty much anything at this point is very helpful, because I feel like I've really exhausted all I can without extra parts. I feel I've narrowed it down to the memory or CPU, and I still have my doubts on the motherboard. With no extra parts or computers, the last few parts are not easy to test. I'm considering just buying a new motherboard and seeing if that solves it, and if so, hoping I can return the original. I mean, to me, that would obviously say it is defective. And seeing as it was "repaired", that'd really rub me the wrong way, lol.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Yeah I think so as well, hard to say when they sent it back repaired. Considering all thats left as a culprit is the memory and CPU, I decided to RMA both of them, see how that goes. Can't say I haven't done as much as possible to figure it out at least. If they both come back okay or replaced, and its still failing to start up correctly, it seems I'm gonna have to just break down and buy a new motherboard and see if that solves it. If it does, I'll never buy another ASUS product again just simply on their customer support, lol. Considering the PSU went out, maybe it took something else out with it? I don't know if it can or did, never had this happen before.
