Hi, I need to buy an external drive soon and the new ADATA HC500 500GB 2.5" caught my eye.

Here's the link to it:
http://www.adata.com/index.php?action=product_feature&cid=2&piid=315

The only problem is it seems to be so new that there are no reviews - at least I couldn't find anything useful. I would like to at least know its read/write speed. Wheter it's reliable is a different story.

I've had ADATA memory cards way back when the company started and they were fine. Overall it seems like an OK brand. Definitely one of the better ones out there I think. Not sure about their drives, though.

I also thought about the WD My Passport Ultra 500GB and WD Elements 500GB drives, but I don't know. They just look too fragile and I'd say WD is better at making internal drives.

I have two external 3.5" Seagate drives, pretty old ones actually, and they're fine.

That's why I also looked into the Seagate BackUp Plus Portable 1TB and Seagate Slim Portable 500GB.

These are the 4 options I'm stuck with right now. No idea what to get.

What I want is a 2.5" drive with either 0,5TB or 1TB of space that is reliable (I know... I know...) and does not require me to install software in order to use it - that is key. I don't want any annoying backup tools. I just want to copy and go, eventually store something for a few months. Included cable in package would be welcome too. And one more, also important thing, I want the case to be a bit resistant and withstand an accidental fall from the desk and carrying it in a bag. Encryption is a nice bonus, but nothing I need.

Anyone?

Hi again, Flying Zebra!

Glad we were able to help you out!
I hope you have an awesome experience with your arriving WD Black drive as well.
Good luck and happy computing! :bounce:

Personally I only trust WD drives, both internal & external.

The thing about buying an ADATA or any other third-party one is that you don't know what brand hard drive is in it since ADATA don't make hard drives - - they just buy them from a hard drive manufacturer and stick them in an enclosure with their own name on it.

That's why I buy WD ones, you know exactly what you're getting. Same with Seagate ones of course, though I don't buy them because I've had too many fail on me well before they should have failed.

The WD Passport ones you can also buy an outer protective "shell" made by WD called "Nomad".

Hey there, Flying Zebra!

I just wanted to add to what @Phillip Corcoran mentioned about our WD drives.
External HDDs are in fact internal HDDs + external enclosure. They are limited to the speed of the external interface itself, and the drive inside is actually a WD internal. However, you can read more about this in our knowledge base: http://goo.gl/n1RYow

As for the fragility, this is something that concerns every external hard disk drive out there.
Due to their mechanical structure, they damage easily if they're not taken care of properly.
That's why you should be very careful when handling externals, regardless of the manufacturer.

Hope this info was helpful. :)

Thanks for the replies.

I think you both make some good points.

It wasn't easy, but I decided to go with the 500GB Seagate BackUp Plus Slim. Mainly because of the look/price and the fact I have good experience with Seagate drives.

I ordered with it also a Connect IT CI-148 shell to protect it. I think it should do the job.

As for picking a solution... it's a tie. I'll give it to anyone who replies back first ;)

Despite getting a Seagate, I think I can make you happy by telling you that for my desktop (as my second drive) I bought a 2TB WD Black - my very first Western. It will arrive next week.
