This has not been a fun 2 and a half days on this...

I have a coworker's Lenovo all-in-one Windows 8 pc booted into Xubuntu live right now. Looking at his C: drive, the Windows folder has only one folder inside it: "Logs" which goes down a further level or two and has a few (empty) log files in it.

The "found.000" folder has just about everything- it looks like user files, drivers, program information, etc- in close to 10K files and folders just in the top level, all ending in the ".chk" extension. They work fine as far as I can tell- the pdf files still open as pdf's, images open fine, etc. I have all of these backed up onto an external hard drive.

Windows Recovery and Windows Reset both fail and take me back to Advanced Tools.

I have the exact same model computer as him. Is there any way I can possibly restore his using system info from mine? Or do I need to do a complete reinstall of Windows 8 and call it a day? I've tried a USB recovery and I have a copy of Windows 8 to do the reinstall, but will it ask for my product key or is that likely to be on the MB?

If anyone has any additional information to request taht might help, I'll do what I can to get it for you, even taking pictures of the screen with my phone if need be.

Thanks guys.

yes you will need your product key. I can't think of a way to fix it because i had this problem a while back and when i try to edit certain windows files i couldn't because i need administrative privileges which i cant get on Ubuntu so just reinstall
