Is Shadowplay worth buying a new Graphics Card?

I am a Youtube let's player, I play cpu intensive games such as Europa Universalis 4 and Crusader Kings 2. Although off recording Iike to play games like Battlefield, and when I comes out on PC, Grand Theft Auto 5. I have a i5 2500k its a little outdated, but still performs very well and it is a great overclocker from what I've heard. But whenever I go on forums and ask what upgrade I should get, they all say get a new cpu. But, in my mind, I can't justify getting a new cpu over a new gpu. Also with Skylake coming out next year it just doesn't make sense.

But, with the new GTX 970 that came out not to long ago, it seems like the best buy. For only around $350, you get an absolute beast of a GPU, and you get new additions such as MFAA and DSR. That finally brings me to Shadowplay, using Fraps or any other recording software has a massive frame rate hit on your game which ruins the experience for the player and the viewer. Which means you will either have to lower game settings or spending money to get better components, and with Youtube's new 60 fps feature, it is almost unplayable to record at that frame rate.

So I am here to ask if buying the gtx 970 for Shadowplay and Maxwell's other features worth $350? Or should I go for a better cpu such as the i7 3770k, as Sandy-bridge is backwards compatible with Ivy-bridge? My budget is $400 and I am planning to order around Christmas time so prices should be lower.

CPU: i5 2500k
GPU: GTX 460
RAM: 8gb

It would be better to upgrade your GPU. The 2500K is still a great CPU. It would be best to wait for Skylake before considering a CPU upgrade, like you said.

Shadowplay has almost no frame hit. It would be a huge upgrade over Fraps.

The 970 is a great choice. I recommend the MSI Gaming or Gigabyte G1, both are awesome cards.
