So which is better a 4k monitor or a triple monitor setup? i noticed that 4k monitors are getting really cheap nowadays (as low as $600) and was wondering if its a better idea to switch to a 4k monitor instead of buying 2 more monitors plus a new desk (to support them all) going to get a gtx 970 but i may get another one or a gtx 980

Solution
5760x1080 would be slightly easier to run compared to 4k.

If you alright with monitor bezels and surround/eyefinity the 1080p monitors would be better from a hardware standpoint. (31FPS vs 25) on BF4 ultra with a 970.
I dont recommend 4k due to its price and hardware demands.

You can also take the middle ground with a nice 1440p monitor.

neither is better, its just what you prefer, wider field of view, or higher resolution. if you want to game at 4k your going to want at least 2 gtx970's, if not 3. for 3x 1080p 2x 970's should suffice, or 1 970 with reduced detail settings, depending on the game. and as has been said a 1440p monitor, or even an ultra wide 21:9 monitor may suit you without having to buy a new desk.

Old post but for anyone else that reads, I had a 1440p monitor for two years, upgraded to a Dell 4K IPS monitor for a week, didn't find it that much more impressive over 1440p for the price and everything was too small even after being scaled. I then decided to try 3x1080p IPS monitors in Nvidia Surround, and it's by far my favourite of the 3 options both multi-tasking and immersion. Will never go back to single monitor setup.

that is interesting to know. I am looking to update my 24"1080 monitor at some stage and was debating to go a 1440p, or maybe one of the ultra wide 2560x1080 models, which seems a good compromise when you dont have room for 3 monitors.

1440p is good, but I think many of the people that notice a huge difference between 1080p and 1440p were either using TN panels before they upgraded (almost all 1440p monitors are IPS), or they were using a 27" 1080p which isn't great.

23" 1080p is only 13ppi (~12%) lower density than a 27" 1440p monitor, and 3 of them are AWESOME! The key is IPS.
