Can't boot up with GPU, boots fine without.

Hey guys, I'm having issues with my laptop properly booting up.
The scenario:
Can boot up fine and run non-GPU intensive programs without trouble.

BUT if my GPU is installed and the laptop tries to boot with it it endlessly continues to try booting up sometimes freezing up.

Here's the things Ive tried so far that I can remember, it's been a couple months since I jumped back on the horse and tried to tackle this problem.
1.System Restore.
2.New Drivers.
3.Clean spank'in install.

Now here's what I have to do for it to run period:
1.System restore.
2.Boot into Safe Mode.
3.Uninstall GPU and associated Drivers in Safe Mode.
4.Restart.
5.Computer boots up fine without GPU.

Some other information:
I originally received an error code 31 in device manager
(if I remember correctly)
Had to locate and reinstall basic device drivers for Ricoh card reader and Picture Card Controller.
After I successfully bootup, windows automatically searches for and installs the drivers for my GPU, but I have to uninstall the device and drivers again BEFORE I restart, or I must perform the above mentioned steps again to successfully boot.

I got this far by doing research and trying other fixes from posts on this website, but I'm honestly at the end of the line here and I just don't think I'm going to solve this one without some help.

Here's my logic and questions on this scenario.
Why am I able to boot up without my dedicated graphics card when my laptop has no integrated or backup GPU?
If my card is possibly damaged then how can my laptop still see that it's there?
I would also like to apologize if I posted this thread in the wrong area, I'm new to the forums here, thanks for any help you guys can provide, really appreciate it.

Asus G60JX I believe its about 3-4 years old. I've kept it it good condition, repasting heatsinks once or twice a year and keeping the air flow dust free.
Error 31 is a generic windows error code that states "This device is not functioning properly".
The problem with that error code is that it could be the card dying or just a driver issue.

I could always be wrong but it boots up fine with the graphics card uninstalled.
I can't think of anything else that could be causing the problem other than the drivers for it as well.

Is there anything you would suggest I do to make absolutely sure it's my graphics card?
