Should I get 32GB of RAM?

I currently have 16Gb RAM (8192x2).
I wonder if I should get another pair of RAM and get 32GB.

I mainly play games, hosting servers for different games(Minecraft, Terraria, Starbound I.E) And sometimes I use RAMdisk. It would be fun to use a RAMdisk with 24 GB memory.

But is it worth it?

I can't say as I've used RAMdisk that much so I can't really comment. Given that single programs don't really show any difference between cheap and top-tier SSDs, I can't imagine a RAMdisk is going to make that much difference, even if it is 20-200 times faster in theory. But hey, each to his/her own.

If I were you I'd be saving my money rather than putting it into a mass of soon-to-be-obsolete DDR3 RAM.
RAMdisk is the only thing you list there that would benefit from the additional RAM. 16GB is already overkill for a gaming machine, and adding an extra 16 just isn't going to make any difference.

You can, of course, allocate all the extra RAM to a RAMdisk as you say. The question is: is the cost of the extra RAM worth a larger RAMdisk for you? I know the answer for me would be a straight up 'no-way', but perhaps it's worth it for you?

It would be nice to try out some bigger programs using RAMDisk. Since I have 16GB memory and I try to leave 8GB for the system to run on. Leaving me with a RAMDisk with 8GB. So if I have 32GB, I can leave 8 GB for the system and I will have a RAMDisk on 24GB.

Or I can just save up for a X99 DDR4 system..

RAMDisk isn't going to make much of a difference. RAMDisk is mostly important for server-class tiers, especially if running databases for the extremely reduced overhead (even if it just reduces the delay by 0.1ms compared to an enterprise SSD, 0.1ms a hundred million times has a significant impact).

For home use, it's really not going to have much of an impact. You might boot up certain programs faster, but compared to a commercial SSD the difference will be really reduced. Stick with a better SSDs rather than wasting money on 16GB of RAM. I start Photoshop in less than three seconds on my SSDs, but you might get that down to 1 second using a RAMDisk. For games, it might be more noticeable. I still find it unnecessary, because you're introducing volatile data.

However, if you're swimming in money, go for it, why the hell not.

Kinda off-topic: since you need to initiate the RAMDisk every time you boot up you might have to wait some time if the RAMDisk is that large.
