I'm making a computer with these:

ASUS ROG Maximus VII Hero
i7-4790K
1/2 Nvidia GTX 980
Kingston HyperX Predator 16 GB

My first question is whether this system will even work. I'm not very experienced and I'm not sure whether this system will work. I'm not sure whether my motherboard will support the speed of my RAM. My second question is whether I should get 1 or 2 GTX 980 so that it is most optimized with the CPU. Also I'm not sure what PSU I should get. Thanks in advance.

Solution
you've left out the main details of the specs here:
is the asus ROG maximums a z97 / z87 socket? (I can't keep track with all their iterations) or is it an X99 socket. if it's X99 it won't work.
is the Kingston HyperX predator 16GB DDR3 or DDR4? if it's DDR4 then you need to use the X99 socket or change ram to a DDR3 variant.
as for your 2nd question, the Asus Mobo's normally cover all MHZ ranges of the RAM provided it's the right type (DDR3 and DDR4)
Your CPU could definitely use a 2nd ggtx 980, if you wanted it too. If it were me I'd get a second if I was doing 1440p or 4k.

SLI 980s? sounds like an EVGA supernova g2 750W Gold certified fully modular. Normally the best quality for this wattage.
that being said if there's a seasonic, antec or xfx unit that is 80+ bronze or better with 750W or better, then you'll be solid. Modular cables also make it much easier
