Low(ish) FPS in CS:GO with good setup?

Hey all,

I recently built a new PC (specs below) and am pretty surprised that I'm only getting 119fps in CS:GO. No matter what other video settings I play with, the FPS does not change. I've tried changing the fps_max value, but that doesn't do anything either.

CPU: Intel Core i5 4690k @ 4.4ghz
Cooler: Corsair H100i
MoBo: MSI Z97-MPOWER
RAM: 16GB Kingston HyperX Fury
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB (Superclocked)

In-game Settings: http://i.imgur.com/5TLqFIN.jpg
nVidia 3D Settings: http://i.imgur.com/qYhcOJm.jpg

Launch Options: -novid -high -threads 4

Whilst I know that 119 is plenty and definitely playable, I feel that with these specs I should be getting 250+.

Any ideas / info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Sam

AF x4 or at most x8 is perfectly fine.
You can also drop MSAA to x2 or even remove it completely, most games do not show any quality improvements the higher you set it but they do take a massive performance hit.

REALLY do not pursue better FPS unless you are having an issue with more than 1 game. ESPECIALLY with something like CS:GO that is not taxing or even consistent in any way.

Another thing to note is DO NOT trust youtube.
YOur resolution may be completely different to the people that made the video, they could be lying, could be pretty much anything.
Point is, there is no reason to care about getting more FPS other than bragging rights.
x16 AF. That is taxing in any game.

Anyway, 119FPS is not just playable, its UNDETECTABLE compared to 60FPS to the human eye and can not even be displayed by MOST monitors.

Most monitors only can display 60FPS (60Hz monitor refresh rate).

Nothing wrong with your system from what I can tell.

If you want you can run a games that is actually intense or a benchmark and see how it performs.

Hey Novuake,

Thanks for the prompt response.

As mentioned, I know that 119 is playable, but I'm just curious to know why I seem to be locked at that frame rate..? I have seen videos of other people with older hardware getting 250+fps in game, so it has me wondering if it has something to do with settings or hardware etc.

As for x16 AF - what would you suggest I change this to?

I have to disagree with Novuake here and say that having a higher FPS does matter. CSGO feels noticeably more responsive at higher FPS, especially your mouse imput. Also the difference between 120hz and 60hz is massive if your monitor is 120hz (this whole undetectable to the eye thing is simply not true). Now it's true that 119fps is perfectly acceptable, but there is reason to want more. ( This may mean nothing to you, but pro players always have a FPS over 300 rather than lock it at 120 because you can feel a difference)

If you are mainly worried about your competitive performance, you should consider turning all those settings down to low except shadows. Leave shadows on high.
The Shaders will make the game look a lot better, but also hit performance quite bad.
Novuake was spot on about the filtering; turn that down to 2x for best ''looks to performance ratio''.
Maybe consider turning down the Anti aliasing as well. ( pretty much just preference on this one)
I would suggest turning off FXAA, it just seems to blur up the edges and can make spotting heads as they pop up over a ledge a bit more difficult.
aDren on youtube has some excellent videos on this topic that you should check out.

CS:GO players, actually pretty much any "hardcore" FPS players have always believed that they need better FPS to win, the more the better.

You are fooling yourself.

The below is true though. But if your monitor CAN NOT EVEN display 120FPS or even the rediculous 300FPS "PROs" aim for, then how in heavens name can you notice the difference?
"Also the difference between 120hz and 60hz is massive if your monitor is 120hz".

What I meant to say was ''the difference between 60fps and 120fps is massive if your monitor is capable of displaying 120hz.
While it is true that having more fps may not look different on your screen past your monitors refresh rate, the improvement lies in the responsiveness. It's no myth that higher fps=lower input lag and that's all I'm claiming. It makes your mouse movements feel sharper.

You are right that we don't need ''300fps'' to win; but why not strive to get the most out of our system if all it takes is some tweaking and a slight visual downgrade?
Also, 300 fps is not that ridiculous because of how easy CSGO is to run, especially on the low resolutions that people who have been playing the franchise for a long time are used to.
