Hey everyone,

I'm building a new PC, and as I'm ordering the OS I'm seeing two different versions of Windows 8. So my question is if I'm building a new PC, do I need to get the System Builder OEM edition?

"System Builder OEM": http://www.amazon.com/Windows-8-1-System-Builder-64-Bit/dp/B00F3ZN2W0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1416492096&sr=8-2&keywords=windows+8

"Normal" Windows 8.1: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EDSI7QO/ref=amb_link_425109562_4?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=hero-quick-promo&pf_rd_r=1BQ6B9NM9MN4J37QXPFR&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=1928055622&pf_rd_i=B00F3ZN2W0

If you're building a system from scratch, it does not have an OS installed. Of the two versions of Windows 8.1 you linked, the only difference is with the Retail, "full" version, you can get tech support from Microsoft. With the OEM version, you can only get tech support from forums like this. Aside from that, there is no difference between the two. No, you do not "NEED" to purchase the System Builder's version, but for the most part, there is no reason not to.

Thanks for the response.

I've read about OEM being tied to one motherboard, but what I'm asking is if I need the System Builder edition when building a PC from scratch (i.e. it does not have an OS) rather than upgrading a PC that already has an OS installed on it.

So if I'm building a PC from scratch, will the normal / full version of Windows 8.1 work ?
