I have a 4 year old Toshiba Satellite L640 laptop. I cant remember the last time I used the optical drive (probably never). I have been thinking about removing it, but I haven't been able to find anything about it on internet, like no article on why do it, or how to do it, or is it practical and stuff like that.

My only concern is that I don't know how deeply the optical drive is embedded in a laptop system, is it like if the laptop doesn't find it, it would not start? I know that's not true for a desktop, I have tinkered with my desktop a lot, but never went inside a laptop.

So the question is, how practical is it to remove the optical drive? And if it is, what things should I keep in mind?

Thanks a ton in advance!!

Solution
Do not remove it. What could you put in the space it came out of? You would have a hole in the case exposing the inside to dust or other objects. If you do not use it, ignore it. It in no ways impacts the performance of the system as it is a type of input device.
