I'd say at least 5mbps, you could play with 1mbps but you wouldn't be able to do other things while gaming without suffering from lag, also current games have big patches that would take too long to download with only 1mbps.

Any decent DSL/Cable will do it.
Of course, if you are a pro you need a top connection.. lol
