This morning I heard my Maxtor external hard drive repeatedly spinning and stopping along with my external dvd drive LED constantly flashing. That was accompanied by my Gateway laptop beeping every 5-10 seconds as if a usb device was being connected and disconnected. Long story short I have errors indicating that my USB Mass Storage Device has a driver problem as well as "unknown device". This all starterd after I received a windows update kb976902. System restore failed and I can't uninstall the update. I also received error message "windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems(code 43). None of my USB devices are recognized in My Computer. Any help to resolve this craziness would be appreciated. Thanks.
USB Mass Storage driver update fails

I booted into safe mode and viewed updates only to find that the update was not listed. I also scanned with MalwareBytes which found 2 issues. Upon reboot my external hard drive appeared and seems to be working ok. I have no idea what happened but am relieved that it's resolved. Thanks Xibyth for your suggestion.
