I am building a computer for a friend and he has windows 8.1 on his current PC, I know that I will need to re install windows on the new PC but will I be able to put the windows 8.1 file on a DVD or flash drive and then use the activation key that was on the side of his old computer to activate it? Or are there any other options? Any help would be great!

If Your friend has OEM license, You'll have to activate via telephone, and/or write a letter to Microsoft that old computer died, and that You want to move Your license.
