Hey so I have a Dell Inspiron N7010 with an i5 processor and an AMD Radeon graphics card with 4 GB of RAM. This computer is currently about 5 years old and I understand a new laptop would work the best but can't afford that so this is about my only option if it will actually work. I am currently a student in the architecture field and use my computer everyday and run programs that are hefty loads on my computer and I also use it for gaming (I know that it ain't at all the greatest but it works for me(poor college student on low budget)). I was considering getting more RAM for it to bump it up to 8 GB. Would this help in speeding up the programs used and games played? Like I said earlier I currently have 4 GB and would up it to 8 GB so i think it would help but was just looking for other opinions. Also any suggestions on brand of RAM to get? Thanks!

Look with cpu-z what speed, timings and voltage the current ram is and get somethng that matches it.I assume you've got 1x4gb in the laptop.
Are you sure al ram is used? You could check with task manager first before buying.

RAM is a good upgrade. So is a SSD.
SSDs make huge differences Especially in a laptop.

I would say go with 6 or 8GB of rAM, and get a 240GB SSD (Kingston, Crucial, and Samsung make good SSDs. Intel makes SSDs also, but they cost more and don't provide a major performance increase over their cheaper Samsung/Kingston/Crucial counterparts.)
