High cpu usage, desktop lagging, games lagging, fans grinding

I updates my desktop with the latest Windows 7 update about a week ago. The very next morning my computer barely functions.

My cpu usage was idling unusually high, so I ran 4 different virus scans in safe mode to no avail. After removing some start up programs, things seemed fine until I launched any program.

I'm a huge gamer, so I immediately launched one of my games. It ran fine at first, but after 20 seconds it begins to drag and my cpu usage is high and doing what it was before I removed startup programs. My game lags and crashes, and won't restart.

I ran a cpu test. I can't remember which as I'm on my phone atm. It ran perfectly fine for 5 minutes. All 8 cores operating at 100%, then the fans started making a whining sound. I closed the program and my desktop continued to lag, and my cpu usage remained at 40% with nothing running.

After a few moments the fan whining stopped, and started up again. The lag and high usage remained.

Speed fan tells me my main fan is kicking up to about 5k rpm. It has NEVER gone about 3.5k even when running high end games. I also haven't been able to get a read of my cpu temperature. It always reads -60c. It has since I built my rig 3 years ago.

One of the fans really doesn't work, and my case has been thoroughly cleaned. Said fan hasn't worked in about a year, and these problems sprung up overnight. I don't know if I can attribute it to hardware or software issues.

It does seem to run better in safe mode, but I haven't tried launching anything but antivirus due to long launch times.

any experts can correct me but 97-98 max temps are not normal and are causing thermal throttling due to it reaching close to tjmax of 100C. all i can recommend replacing the thermal compound on the cpu, and maybe a better cooler or cut back on the overclocking if any.

edit : 70 C idles are very high too judging from other components either ur ambient is close to 35 degrees (HDD temp) or there isn't enough air flow through case

I've got 8 cores which all show to be running at 40%-100% when this occurs.
I've got 4 fans counting my gpu fan. The one at the back of the case has not worked in over a year. The one on the front and on the gpu work fine. The fan at the top of the case is the one kicking up to 5k and whining.

thats a perfectly capable pc, have u checked ur resource manger ? possibly a malware and virus scan? 40% idle to my knowledge is not normal :p also any abnormal gpu or cpu temp (close to tjmax) ?

In my first post I stated that I ran 4 separate virus and rootkit scans in safe mode. I live in the middle of nowhere and have absolutely no spare money whatsoever. I can't afford to take it anywhere or buy parts, but I work online so if I can't get it running I'm screwed.

It doesnt. Occasionally svchost will use a bit more than I'd like but it settles down just fine. I've gotten rid my pc being constantly laggy, but whenever I launch an intensive program it lags again and just keeps grinding to a halt.

I've actually powered it back up after a week of not wanting to deal with it. I'm updating archeage and I'm going to launch it and take not of what happens on my processes.
